Branscomb, Lewis M., 1926-
Oral history interviews with Lewis McAdory Branscomb, 2009-2010.
This collection consists of transcriptions of seven interviews of Branscomb conducted by his wife, Constance Mullin Branscomb from August 2009 to January 2010. Topics addressed in these interviews include Branscomb's early childhood memories, his college days at Duke University and Harvard University, and his experiences as a naval officer. These interviews trace Branscomb's long career beginning with his first job at the National Bureau of Standards, his founding of the Joint Institute of Laboratory Astrophysics at the University of Colorado, and his work at the Institute for Defense Analyses. The interviews recount Branscomb's selection as chief scientist at the International Business Machines Corporation, and his appointment as adjunct professor at the University of California at San Diego. The interviews document Branscomb's reaction to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001; recount his participation on a National Academy of Sciences study group examining how the scientific community could respond to the country's needs after the terrorist attacks, and also present his views on the rationale for the invasion of Iraq in 2003. The interviews also document Branscomb's home life and refer to his marriages, children, house hunting, and travel activities.
Included with the interviews are seven photographs. These include: 1) a Branscomb family photograph (1938); 2) Lewis Branscomb as an apprentice seaman (1943); 3) a wedding photograph of Lewis and Anne Wells Branscomb (1951); 4) Branscomb and his family skiing in Colorado (1967); 5) Lewis Branscomb as vice president and chief scientist at IBM Corporation (1981); 6) co-chairs Lewis Branscomb and Rick Klausner of the National Science Academies' Committee testifying before a joint Congressional committee (2002); 7) a wedding photograph of Lewis and Constance Mullin Branscomb (2005).
