Linsley, John
John Linsley papers, 1946-2002 (bulk 1950-2002).
The John Linsley papers primarily consist of materials related to his work on cosmic rays. The bulk of the collection consists of drafts and reprints of most of Linsley's articles, materials related to the building and running of Volcano Ranch at the University of New Mexico, and subject files related to cosmic rays. Linsley's observations at Volcano Ranch expanded the known cosmic ray energy spectrum, clarified the structure of air showers, and provided the first evidence on ultra-high-energy cosmic ray composition and arrival directions. The papers also include lext from Linsley's lectures and about 2,000 pieces of correspondence. The collection also contains smaller amounts of biographical material, materials related to experiments and research other than work at Volcano Ranch, materials related to Linsley's professional positions, organizations, and activities, professional literature, and photographs.
American physicist (1925-2002). Ph.D., physics (University of Minnesota, 1952). Professor of physics, University of Virginia (1951-1952), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1955-1958, 1972-1977) and University of New Mexico (1977-1978). Linsley was a fellow of the American Physical Society and known for research in cosmic rays and astronomy.
