Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimeter Experiment records, 1982-1995.
Records of the Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimeter Experiment (WUPPE) was a telescope developed at the University of Wisconsin's Department of Astronomy during the 1980s. It was designed to measure the polarization of starlight in the ultraviolet spectrum. WUPPE was added to the payload of the Space Shuttle Columbia along with three other telescopes, collectively known as Astro 1. After a postponement due to the Challenger explosion, and several aborted attempts due to instrument malfunctions, lift-off occurred on December 2, 1990. The flight is known as Space Transportation System 35, commonly shortened to STS-35. The mission goal was to make precise measurements of objects such as planets, stars, and galaxies in relatively small fields of view.
Founded in 1848, the University of Wisconsin-Madison is the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System. The Department of Astronomy is part of the College of Arts and Letters, and includes the Washburn Observatory, Woodman Astronomical Library and the Space Astronomy Laboratory.
