National Air and Space Museum Department of Space History Space Telescope History Project records, circa 1968-1988.
Collection consists of materials created and maintained by Robert W. Smith, Historian of the National Air and Space Museum, Department of Space History. The records document the Space Telescope History Project, which led to a publication of the same title. Materials include minutes of meetings, schedules, photographs, publicity materials of the manufacturers, background material, newspaper clippings, newsletters, brochures, records transmittal forms, and correspondence.
Accession 11-300 (circa 1988) consists of an unpublished manuscript, "Shaping the Space Telescope: The Interpenetration of Science, Technology, and Politics," by Historian Robert W. Smith.
The Space History Division is the focal point for the space-related historical research, collecting, and exhibit work of the National Air and Space Museum. Curators and staff within the department research and publish; engage in public outreach through exhibitions, lectures, and other means; and collect and manage the care of rocket and space artifacts in the Museum's collection. The Division embodies the Museum's mission to preserve, understand, and communicate the history of rocketry and space exploration as part of the larger story of United States and world history.
