National Air and Space Museum Space Telescope History Project records, 1983-1990.
This oral history project examines the space sciences, predominantly astronomy, from the 1970s through the mid-1980s, through the lens of a particular undertaking, the Hubble Space Telescope. By the time of active planning for the Hubble (first called the Large Space Telescope, then simply Space Telescope), research implemented via space technologies had become part of astronomy's reportoire. These interviews mark a different stage in astronomy and the space sciences, that of configuring new political relations among the space sciences and sponsors. In part, this shift was a consequence of the more complex social matrix within which space sciences were situated after the 1960s. The principle investigator was Robert W. Smith. Individuals interviewed were: Bob Adams (with Robert Trevino and Kitty Havens), M. Aucremanne, John Bahcall, Neta Bahcall, William Baum, Michael Belton, March Bensimon, Robert Bless, Greg Boeshaar, Albert Boggess, John Brandt, Robert Brown, Bert Bulkin, Margaret Burbidge, J. J.
