Uhlenbeck, George Eugn̈e, 1900-1988-
George Uhlenbeck papers, 1918-1982 (bulk 1925-1970).
Papers document a lengthy career both as a physicist of international renown and an active teacher and collaborator. The correspondence series is divided into two subseries; the first is arranged chronologically (1926-1981) and includes technical discussions of ongoing research in nuclear physics, evaluations of the work of students, assessments of the effects of the rise of National Socialism in Germany on European Physics, and correspondence regarding guest lectureships and visiting professorships. The second subseries is arranged alphabetically by correspondent and includes material from Uhlenbeck's mentor, Paul Ehrenfest; his first collaborator, Samuel Goudsmit; Mark Kac; Martin J. Klein; J. Robert Oppenheimer; Wolfgang Pauli; and editors of the American Institute of Physics and the American Physical Society. The papers also include Uhlenbeck's publications, scientific notebooks, unpublished articles and a speech draft which contains a reminiscence about Paul Ehrenfest.
A theoretical physicist, Uhlenbeck was born in Batavia, Java, Dutch East Indies (now Jakarta, Indonesia), educated at the University of Leiden, and taught at the University of Michigan, University of Utrecht, and Rockefeller University. In addition, he directed classified radar research at the Radiation Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1942 to 1945 and held visiting professorships at the University of Leiden and the University of Amsterdam.
