Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Director's Office.
SLAC Director's Office records of Burton Richter, 1974-[ongoing].
Records include correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes and other administrative materials regarding administration of the lab's research, technical and business affairs; the experimental program (Linac, Positron-Electron Project [PEP], Stanford Linear Collider [SLC], SPEAR) and projects; the Experimental Program Advisory Committee and the SLAC/Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Users Organization; SLAC Accelerator facilities (SLC, Linac, SPEAR, PEP), and advanced accelerator projects. Also included are files regarding SLAC's relationship with the Department of Energy, with other U.S. and foreign high-energy-physics efforts (particularly accelerator labs); university relations and files relating to Richter's faculty responsibilities; and Richter's other professional files including organizations and committees, travel, talks and publications. There are some files dating back to Wolfgang Panofsky's tenure as Director as well as some of Richter's files prior to his becoming lab Director.
Burton Richter, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center's (SLAC) second and current Director took a leading role in the development of storage-ring technology. As Group Leader of SLAC's group C, he oversaw design and construction of the Stanford Positron Electron Accelerator Ring (SPEAR) and served as spokesman for SP-17, the Psi Collaboration. In 1976, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Samuel C. C. Ting for their simultaneous discovery of the J/psi particle. Richter received his B.S. (1952) and Ph.D (1956) from MIT. In 1956, he joined the Stanford faculty, focussing his research first at the High Energy Laboratory and in 1959, at SLAC. Richter became Associate Director of SLAC's Technical Division in 1982-84 and Director of the laboratory in 1984.
