Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Director's Office.
SLAC Director's Office records of Wolfgang K. H. Panofsky, 1938-[ongoing].
The bulk of the collection (1957-1984) consists of extensive administrative and professional correspondence and memoranda, subject files, minutes and reports, and other materials relating to Panofsky's responsibilities as Director of SLAC and his activities in the larger science community. These responsibilities are reflected in extensive files regarding the development and operation of SLAC as well as interactions with Stanford University, with other laboratories, with the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) and now DOE, and with other government bodies. These records include experiment proposals and minutes of the Program Advisory Board; files regarding other laboratories (U.S. and foreign) including the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory; files regarding University administrative policies affecting SLAC and other campus affairs; files regarding interactions with AEC, ERDA and the DOE (including monthly reports, 1968-83); Research Division program, group, and project files; Technical Division material including technical planning, and Division oversight of facilities and equipment; Chronological correspondence files; manpower and budget planning; personnel, user and other policy files. This collection also includes extensive files relating to other aspects of Panofsky's career, including his science policy committee work (HEPAP, CISAC, PSAC); teaching, academic senate, committee work, Arms Control Center and other campus responsibilities as a Stanford professor; early materials from Panofsky's years at Cal Tech and Berkeley; and some non-SLAC publications. Current records (1984-present) relate primarily to his continuing work on the SSC, on various national and international physics and arms control committees, and to his responsibilities as Director Emeritus and Professor Emeritus.
Wolfgang K. H. Panofsky, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center's (SLAC) first Director, is an internationally known experimental high-energy physicist, expert on particle accelerator design, and governmental advisor on physics and international arms control issues. After receiving his a.b. from Princeton (1938) and Ph.D. from Cal Tech (1942, Physics), he did research for the Office of Scientific Research and Development; he then went to the University of California, Berkeley in 1947 as a researcher and then Associate Professor. He joined the faculty of Stanford University as Professor of Physics in 1951, and took on the directorship of the High Energy Physics Laboratory there in 1953. He became Director of SLAC in 1961, and implemented the creation, design and construction of the new two-mile linear accelerator and development of its research program. As Director of SLAC, until his retirement as Emeritus Director and Professor of Physics at Stanford in 1984, Panofsky oversaw the development of SLAC's various facilities (including the Stanford Positron Electron Accelerator Ring [SPEAR], the Positron-Electron Project [PEP], and the initial stages of the Stanford Linear Collider); he took an active role in the development of its research program and in the management of financial, personnel, health and safety, and other business aspects of the laboratory. As both physicist and arms control expert, he has served on many science policy committees, including the President's Science Advisory Committee (PSAC), the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP) to the Department of Energy (DOE), and the Committee for International Security and Arms Control (CISAC) of the National Academy of Sciences. He is Chairman of the Board of Overseers of University Research Associates for the Super-conducting Super Collider Laboratory.
