Lawrence Radiation Laboratory Manhattan Engineering District records, 1939-1946.
This collection documents the University of California Radiation Laboratory work on the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. W.B. Reynolds, the laboratory's business director, created and received these records. The lab was responsible for substantial portions of the administrative operations as well as scientific and technical aspects of for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Manhattan District (Manhattan Project). The laboratory's responsibilities included the operation and coordination of the Los Alamos site in the development of the atomic bomb and the development of facilities at Oak Ridge (Y-12) to separate plutonium for the atomic bomb. The laboratory was founded as the University of California Radiation Laboratory in 1931 by Ernest Orlando Lawrence, a University of California Berkeley physicist who won the 1939 Nobel Prize in physics for his invention of the cyclotron, a circular particle accelerator that opened the door to high-energy physics. It is a United States Department of Energy National Laboratory, operated by the University of California. The name of the laboratory has evolved since its founding: Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (1931-1958), the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (1959-1995), and currently the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (1995-present).
