Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Physics Division
LBL Physics Division Group A (Louis Alvarez Group) logbooks, 1961-1989.
These records document the individual research and development logbooks of the Data Reduction Development Group and its successor, Group A (Luis Alvarez Group) of the Physics Division of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL). The logbooks contain operational information, engineering notes, polaroids of projects, project schedules and progress notes, charts, and diagrams. The logbooks contain data and notes on the following projects: scanning measuring projector, liquid argon multiwire, rubber telescope mirror, superconducting magnet, time projection chamber, and focus tracking granite microscope. Luis Alvarez and his group made discoveries with the liquid hydrogen bubble chamber which won him the Noble Prize in Physics in 1968.
The laboratory was founded as the University of California Radiation Laboratory in 1931 by Ernest Orlando Lawrence, a University of California Berkeley physicist who won the 1939 Nobel Prize in physics for his invention of the cyclotron, a circular particle accelerator that opened the door to high-energy physics. It is a United States Department of Energy National Laboratory, operated by the University of California. The name of the laboratory has evolved since its founding: Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (1931-1958), the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (1959-1995), and currently the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (1995-present).
