Pais Prize session: the national laboratories after 1980 [sound recording], 2012 April 2.
Audio recording of session T5 of the April 2012 annual meeting of the American Physical Society, held in Atlanta, GA in March-April 2012. This session was sponsored by the Forum on the History of Physics (FHP) and chaired by Catherine Westfall of Michigan State University. Talks (and speakers) include: "Abraham Pais Prize for History of Physics Lecture: Big, Bigger, Too Big? From Los Alamos to Fermilab and the SSC" (Lillian Hoddeson); "DOE and its Labs -- Evolution of hte Relationship from the 1970s to Now" (Burton Richter); "A Good Name and Great Riches: Rebranding Solid State Physics for the National Laboratories" (Joseph Martin). Topics discussed include J. Robert Oppenheimer, Los Alamos Laboratory, national laboratories, Brookhaven, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), Fermilab, Superconducting Super Collider (SSC), Wolfgang Panofsky, Leon Lederman, Burton Richter, Department of Energy (DOE), Atomic Energy Commission, solid state physics, DARPA network of interdisciplinary laboratories.
This professional society of educators, industrial and government research workers, and students of physics and related fields, was established in 1899 to promote the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics. The American Physical Society (APS) meetings are a forum for scientists to gather and share research results on a wide range of physics and physics-related topics.
