Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Physics Division
LBL Physics Division research and development files, 1953-1982 (bulk 1970-1978).
Administrative records of major programs and projects of the Physics Division, led by Associate Director Robert Birge, from 1970s to early 1980s. Records include project and program proposals, plans, and reviews, budgets, and records of policy and program committees. These records document the management of physics research at LBL and the collaborative projects of LBL and SLAC in high energy physics. Major projects during this period include: LBL's development of the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) detector system for use as the SLAC Positron-Electron Project (PEP); muon detector development; cosmic microwave background radiation studies; supernovae detection; magnetic fusion; and creation of a computer center at Berkeley. Series includes records of SLAC and PEP Policy Committees; Experimental Program Advisory Committee (EPAC); and High Energy Physics Advisory Committee (HEPAC).
In 1969, the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) electron-positron colliding accelerator was built to investigate particles within the proton and neutron. Physicists were able to detect the quark structure of the proton and, in 1974, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL)-SLAC physicists discovered the J/psi particle at SLAC's SPEAR (Stanford Positron Electron Accelerator Ring). In 1976, they identified other charmed particles in K pion experiments. Associate Directors of LBL Physics Division (1971-1981): William A. Wenzel (1971-1972, Physics I) and Edward J. Lofgren (Physics II); Robert W. Birge (1973-1981). (From 1976 to 1983, the Physics Division was known as Physics Computer Science, and Mathematics Division).
