Schiffer, John P.
My Life in Physics: John Schiffer's autobiography.
Autobiography of John P. Schiffer with some help from Catherine Westfall that discusses his background and early education; his move to the United States from Hungary; his undergraduate education at Oberlin College; his graduate work at Yale University; working at the Rice Institute, Argonne National Laboratory, Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell, a sabbatical at Princeton University and the University of Rochester, and as a professor at the University of Chicago. He also discusses his work with red shift, quarks, the American Physical Society's Division of Nuclear Physics, pions at Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPH), Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC), cold fusion, crystalline plasmas, positron peaks, hafnium, HELIOS, single particle states and it concludes with some reflections.
Ph.D., Yale University (1954); worked at the Rice Institute, Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Chicago along with visiting appointments at Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE) at Harwell, England, Princeton University, University of Rochester and the Technical University Munich. His primary research interests have been trying to understand the single-particle structure and effective interactions that underlie the structure of atomic nuclei.
