Harmon Craig papers, 1923-2005.
Collection 2006-04 (1923-2005): Papers of geochemist Harmon Craig, including field notebooks from expeditions and laboratory data. This material includes notes taken on Helios Expedition (1987), trips including Greece (1974) and Pisa, and gas sample data from Lassen Park, Steamboat Springs and other locations. Also includes data on noble gases, helium, argon, krypton, carbon dioxide, ice cores, Trent River, and amber.
Collection 2004-11 (1934-2001): Correspondence, subject files, manuscript and reprints of publications and other papers by Craig, documenting oceanographic expeditions including Argus, GEOSECS, Paptua, and Zetes, as well as ALVIN dives and research trips including Lake Tanganyika.
Collection 2003-32 (1948-1994): Student and field notes, correspondence, reports, subject files, and photographs by Craig. Photographs were taken on oceanographic expeditions including Monsoon (1961), Carrousel (1964), Pasqua Benthic I (1983), and GEOSECS expeditions including Antipode (1971), Atlantic GEOSECS-Leg 4 (1972), and Antarctic GEOSECS-Leg 7 (1973). The accession also includes slides and photographs of Craigs expeditions to Lake Tanganyika, and a Papa-Tua Expedition (1985-1986) R/V Thomas Washington t-shirt.
Collection 2003-33 (1948-2003): Correspondence, subject files, student notes, manuscripts and reprints of publications by Craig and others. The accession includes Craigs dissertation and student notes from the University of Chicago, including notes for chemistry courses taught by Harold Urey, Nathan Sugarman and others. The accession includes field notes from Wyoming (1948), laboratory notebooks from the University of Chicago, Craigs lecture notes for a course in isotopic thermodynamics at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and papers and subject files documenting GEOSECS.
Collection 2003-41 (1948-2003): Correspondence, proposals, drafts of scientific papers, research notes, reading notes, field notes and other materials documenting.Craigs research on isotope chemistry, volcanism, continental margins, geysers, hot spots and active seismic regions, as well as Craigs many expeditions to Africa, the South Pacific, the Indian Ocean, Papatua Expedition, and Nova Expedition, Leg 3. The accession also includes material on GEOSECS, including correspondence and minutes of the Executive Committee and Science Advisory Committee. Finally, the accession includes Craigs files as an editor of Earth and Planetary Science Letters, including manuscripts of papers submitted to the journal and correspondence exchanged among editors.
Collection 2004-02 (1952-1997): Papers of Craig, including: subject, research, and teaching files from Scripps Institution of Oceanography; files on ALVIN dives and expeditions including GEOSECS Expeditions, Indomed, Monsoon, and Pascua; GEOSECS project files; files on conferences and seminars; C13 data on ocean basalts; research files on cold fusion, the Red Sea, geothermal research, earthquakes, and visits to China.
Collection 2004-16 (1955-1987): Correspondence, subject files, manuscripts, laboratory notebooks, data and other papers by Craig. The accession includes material documenting Standard Mean Ocean Water (SMOW), Greenland Ice Sheet Program (GISP) and other projects, oceanographic expeditions and field work, including research in Tibet, work on geothermal sites and ice cores and information on awards.
Collection 2004-03 (1955-1989): Papers of Craig, including subject, research and teaching files from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The accession includes Craigs field notebooks, isotope laboratory notebooks, ice core research notes, computer printouts of data, and several notebooks labeled, EVs notes.
Collection 2004-06 (1955-1999): Papers of Craig, covering subject, research and teaching files from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Collection 2004-20 (1959-2003): Correspondence, subject files, data, manuscripts and reprints of publications, photographs, lecture slides, and other papers of Craig. The accession includes material documenting oceanographic expeditions including GEOSECS, Pascua, Papatua and Vulcan.
Collection 2004-13 (1960-1999): Data from Samson and Delilah. Samson was an experiment analyzing oxygen and carbon. Delilah analyzed hydrogen and nitrogen. The accession includes analysis logs, GAD logs and data in electronic and analog formats.
Collection 2006-11 (1965-2002): Craigs student notes taken at the University of Chicago, teaching and lecture notes, correspondence, memoranda, telegrams, and subject files relevant to his scientific work,his association with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Vetlesen Prize awarded to Harmon Craig in 1987.
Collection 2004-75 (1979-1989): Films, VHS videocassettes, and audiocassettes of submersible dives, including ALVIN, hydrothermal vents, and geochemistry. Locations include Loihi Seamount, Mariana Trough. GEOSECS, Project Vulcan, Pascua Expedition, and Nova Expedition.
Collection 2004-59 (1985-2003): Papers kept at Craig's home office in La Jolla, California. The accession includes correspondence and research files on World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE), gases, geothermal activity at Steamboat Springs, Yellowstone and other sites, ice cores, and expeditions to the Pacific Ocean and Africa including Pascua.
Collection 2004-45 (1949-1980): 743 35mm color slides taken or collected by Craig on his field trips and expeditions. The slides document Craigs University of Chicago 1949 summer field expedition to Wisconsin and Wyoming, including many views of Yellowstone Park. The slides also document expeditions including Nova (1967), Antipode (1971), GEOSECS (1973), Atlantic GEOSECS (1972), GEOSECS Indian Ocean (1978), and several trips to Africa, including Lake Tanganyika (1973, 1975), Ethiopia (1976), and Nairobi and Djibouti (1979-1980). The slides also include a few images of parties, including the retirement party for Scripps Institution of Oceanography marine technician Frederick S. Dixon and Harold Ureys birthday in 1973.
