The records consist of the central files of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Office of the Director, comprising records generated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography Director Edward A. Frieman and Interim Director Wolfgang Berger and their office staff. The records include correspondence, memoranda, scientific reports, financial records, minutes of meetings and other materials that document the planning, administration, and daily operation of SIO. The collection includes material documenting all SIO units. There is also substantial material on gifts and endowments, real estate, international cooperation, personnel, and committees. A second accession consists of two boxes of files received from Lisa Shaffer who was in charge of the international relations program at Scripps.
Dr. Edward A. Frieman was appointed eighth Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Vice Chancellor for Marine Science and Dean of Scripps Institution of Oceanography by UCSD Chancellor Richard C. Atkinson on July 1, 1986. He retired on August 31, 1996. UCSD Chancellor Robert C. Dynes appointed SIO professor Wolfgang Helmut Berger Interim Director, Scripps Institution of Oceanography effective September 1, 1996. Berger was appointed to fill the position from the date of Dr. Edward A. Friemans retirement as director until the appointment of a new director. Dr. Berger served as Interim Director until December 31, 1998, when Dr. Charles Kennel was appointed ninth Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
