Francis Birch papers, 1897-1992.
Francis Birch was a pioneer in the study of geophysics, a participant in the Manhattan Project, and an advisor on public policy matters involving geophysics, especially the disposal of nuclear waste. His papers document the breadth of his work in research, consulting, teaching, and his relationships with colleagues and scientific societies. The collection contains correspondence, reports and manuscripts, photographs, and other papers relating to Francis Birchs professional interests and personal history. Topics and concerns include laboratory apparatus, field studies, the development of theoretical models of the Earths composition; the study of geophysics in the United States and abroad; and Birchs Harvard appointments, scientific honors, and participation in the Manhattan Project during World War II.
(1903-1992) Professor of geophysics at Harvard from 1937 to 1974, and Sturgis Hooper Professor of Geology from 1949 to 1974.
