North American Astrophysical Observatory
North American Astrophysical Observatory records, 1950-1990.
The North American Astrophysical Observatory (NAAPO) records include newsletters, reports, photographs, and related items compiled or produced by NAAPO. The collection contains the computer printout of the WOW! signal received August 15, 1977 at the Ohio State University (Big Ear) Radio Observatory, which may be the first record of contact with extraterrestrial intelligence.
The North American Astrophysical Observatory was chartered in 1983 as a non-profit organization originally formed to save, maintain and operate the Ohio State University Radio Observatory's (OSURO) 110-meter "Big Ear" radio telescope. The Ohio State University constructed the "Big Ear" beginning in 1956 on Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) land, and there they operated the radio telescope research for nearly 40 years. In 1998 the "Big Ear" radio telescope was destroyed by developers and equipment and records were moved to the Ohio State University campus.
