History of metrology and today's frontiers of measurement [sound recording], 2012 March 1.
Audio recording of session X2 of the March 2012 annual meeting of the American Physical Society, held in Boston, MA in February-March 2012. This session was sponsored by the Forum on the History of Physics (FHP) and chaired by Richard Davis of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). Talks (and speakers) include: "Dreams of a Final System: Origins of the Quest for an Absolute Standard" (Robert Crease); "Beller Lectureship: From Artefacts to Atoms: The Origins and Early Years of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM)" (Terry Quinn); "Measurement of the gravitational quantitites g and G: How ideas for precision measurement experiments came about" (James Faller); "The Odyssey of the Frequency Measurements of Visible Light at NBS/NIST" (Howard Layer); "Evolving Planck Constant Measurements into the SI Kilogram Standard"(Richard Steiner). Topics discussed include metrology; A. Michelson; E. Morley; International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM); measurement standards; gravitational measurements; Newtonian constant of graviation; National Bureau of Standards (NBS); National Institute of Standards of Technology (NIST); SI meter; Planck constant.
This professional society of educators, industrial and government research workers, and students of physics and related fields, was established in 1899 to promote the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics. The American Physical Society (APS) meetings are a forum for scientists to gather and share research results on a wide range of physics and physics-related topics.
