Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Office of the Director.
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory records of Leon M. Lederman, 1888-2012.
The bulk of the collection consists of administrative and professional correspondence and memoranda, subject files, minutes and reports, and other materials relating to his responsibilities as Director of Fermilab and his activities in the larger science community. The collection spans the period from the 1960s (research and experiments), through his upsilon discovery in 1977 at Fermilab, to the present. Agency correspondence between the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Laboratory from 1978 to 1989 and the related division, department, or group subject files, laboratory experimental design reports and correspondence, annual reports, budget and funding documents, affirmative action plans, DOE reviews, Scientific Advisory Group minutes, Program Management Group minutes, High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP) files and documents, documents related to the other DOE labs, International Committee on Future Accelerators files of correspondence and workshop proceedings, congressional hearing testimony, accelerator construction and commissioning, Energy Doubler files and reports, Energy Saver files and reports, Laboratory project files and correspondence, site development and facility utilization plans, international collaboration files, Laboratory newsletters, technical and general publications, travel and trip records for meetings, conferences, and symposia. Lederman talks, transparencies, papers, related documents, audio and video tapes, books, reprints, clippings and miscellaneous memorabilia related to Fermilab life in his administration are also part of this collection. Materials related to his 1988 Nobel Prize Prize in physics are also in the collection. Also some Division files from 1978 to 1983. Also includes some recent files of activities from the University of Chicago; the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1987-1993); Superconducting Super Collider materials including publications, correspondence, Congressional testimony, etc. (1989-1994); documents relating to the Illinois Coalition (1989-1994). Some files are still maintained in the Fermilab Director's Office and his current files are located in his Director Emeritus' Office.
Lederman was Director of Fermilab from 1979-1982, and exerted a major influence on the development of the style and outreach of the Laboratory from its beginnings. Among the accomplishments of Lederman's directorship: completion of the Energy Saver, Tevatron I and II programs; boosting of the energy to 800 GeV; construction of the antiproton source for production of antiprotons for collisions with protons pushing the power to 1.8 TeV; construction of two collision areas for detection of these collisions; implementation of enhanced computing capability for event reconstruction and electronic analysis of collision data; planning for the Tevatron Upgrade; enriching the intellectual environment with provocative new forums stimulating creative extensions of the Laboratory such as astrophysics, lecture series and art exhibits, scientific advisory groups, and history of particle physics symposia; and leading the coalition to support and build the Superconducting Super Collider. Lederman developed outreach programs with a particular emphasis on improving science education in public schools. From 1989 to 1992 Lederman taught physics to liberal arts undergraduates at the University of Chicago. In 1992 Lederman joined the faculty of the Illinois Institute of Technology. He continues Fermilab involvement as Director Emeritus.
