In this interview, John Foster discusses his work in the Department of Defense, and military defense in general. Topics from Session I include his appointment by Lyndon Johnson as the Director of the Department of Defense Research and Engineering; his relationship with the Office of the President, U.S. Congress, and various governmet agencies; government funding for weapons research and development, specifically missiles; and military relations with Russia and China. Topics discussed in Session II include a continued discussion of missile development and Chinese and Soviet relations, government defense research and ballistic guidance of nuclear weapons, stratgies in the Vietnam War, and air defense strategies. Topics discussed in Session III include the continued discussion of military defense, jet and submarine developments, as well as relationships between the Department of Defense and other government offices.
