American astronomer and gay rights activist (1928-2011). M.S. and Ph.D., astronomy, Harvard University (1949 and 1956). Department of astronomy, Georgetown University (1956-1957); United States Army Map Service (1957). Kameny was fired from the U.S. Army Map service based on accusation regarding his sexual orientation and in January 1958 was barred from future employment by the federal government. Kameny devoted his life to activism for gay rights and equality.
