Brookhaven National Laboratory. Associate Director for High Energy and Nuclear Physics.
Brookhaven Associate Director for High Energy and Nuclear Physics records, 1960-[ongoing].
Administrative correspondence and subject files are maintained in this office. The files include the Laboratory's primary record of interactions with the High Energy Physics Office at the Atomic Energy Commission, Energy Research and Development Administration, and now Department of Energy; of the Laboratory's role in supporting and assisting the various users' organizations that have been created for experimenters using the BNL particle accelerators; of the Laboratory's sponsorship or participation in national and international meetings and conferences on accelerator design and particle physics; and of the activities of the additional BNL departments and divisions that have been the responsibility of the persons in the office. The files also contain the Laboratory's primary record of the deliberations and actions of the "Cosmotron Review Committee" an external committee established in 1964 to consider and make recommendations about the future operations of the Cosmotron; and on the early stages of planning for the Superconducting Intersecting Storage Accelerator (ISABELLE).
Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is a federally-funded research laboratory founded in 1947. Operated by Associated Universities, Inc., sponsored by nine northeastern universities under a contract with the U. S. Dept. of Energy, BNL conducts research in high energy physics, basic energy sciences, nuclear energy, nuclear and medium energy physics and chemistry, and basic life sciences, including biology and medical use and effect of radiation, radioisotopes, and other nucear tools. Environomental and energy research emphasezes energy systems analysis, new energy technolgies and energy conservation, and reactor safety ayalyses and safeguarads. The office of BNL's senior administrative official is responsible for the high-energy-physics program of the Laboratory. This position has changed in responsibilities and in title several times since its creation in 1960. Rod L. Cool (1960-1970), Ronald R. Rau (1970-1981), Nicholas P. Samios (1981-1983), Robert Palmer (1983-1986), Robert Adair (1987-1988), Larry Trueman (1988-1990), and Melvin Schwartz (1991-) have all had responsibility for the BNL high-energy- physics program and they have all served as ex officio chairman of the BNL High Energy Advisory Committee. Some have been responsible for the BNL Central Shops and for the Applied Mathematics Department. Titles of the office have included As- sistant Director for High Energy Physics (1964-1966), Associate Director for High Energy Physics (1966-1981), Deputy Director for High Energy and Nuclear Physics (1981-1982), Associate Director for High Energy Physics (1983-1987), and Associate Director for High Energy and Nuclear Physics (1987 to the present).
