Harvard College Observatory Office of the Director correspondence, 1926-1975.
Includes correspondence and other records (architectural plans and laboratory notes), 1926-1975, of Donald H. Menzel, Acting Director of the Harvard Observatory, 1952-1954, and Director, 1952-1966. Also contains correspondence between Menzel and G.R. Huguenim (Director of the Radio Astronomy Laboratory), professor A.H. Jarrett, architect Lincoln Boyden, and Hector C. Ingrao, Senior Research Associate and Lecturer on Astronomy at Harvard. Most of the correspondence relates to the telescope(s) at Agassiz Station, as well as to the design of the Damon camera. Also includes correspondence about transferring instruments and equipment owned by Harvard from the Boyden Observatory in Bloemfontein, South Africa to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Other topics include the Boyden Fund; Boyden history; the Chester Cook Memorial Telescope; Hayden Planetarium Exhibits in New York City; Palomar Chart; the solar eclipse expedition to Mexico; the Menzel eclipse and expedition, 1970-73; and the Menzel symposium on solar physics. Correspondence before and after Menzel tenure as director is also included. Also includes extracts or copies of late 19th century documents relating to Uriah A. Boyden bequest.
The Astronomical Observatory was established in 1839, and is now known as the Harvard College Observatory. The Massachusetts stations are in Cambridge and the George R. Agassiz Station (Oak Ridge) in Harvard, Mass. The Boyden Station of the Observatory was originally located in Arequipa, Peru until 1927 when it was transferred near Bloemfontien in the Orange Free State, South Africa. This station closed about 1966.
