University of Wisconsin Department of Astronomy Project Gemini records, 1989-1995.
These records relate to the planning of the telescopes associated with Project Gemini. The collection consists of administrative papers, including board minutes, correspondence, and chair Robert Bless' personal notebooks. Of particular note are the board meeting minutes from May 1992 and the papers relating to the construction of the mirrors, as they relate to controversial issues within the project.
Gemini Observatory is an astronomical observatory consisting of two 8.1-meter telescopes at different sites in Hawaii and Chile. Together the twin telescopes provide almost complete coverage of both the northern and southern skies. The Gemini telescopes were built and operated by a consortium consisting of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, and Australia. The observatory in Hawaii was completed in 1999 and the one in Chile was completed in 2002. Robert Bless, professor emeritus of astronomy at the University of Wisconsin, served as the first chair of the Project Gemini board.
