Oral history interview with John G. King, 2009 November 17.
Interview discusses John G. King's childhood and family background; being drafted into the Army and then transferred to the Navy where he worked on antisubmarine detection and defense projects; entering the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (1946) where he was taken under the wing of Jerold Zacharias; he describes the rise in MIT's prestige due to Zacharias' hiring of Bruno Rossi, Victor Weisskopf, Martin Deutsch, and Herman Feshbach; he describes some of his work on the atomic clock with Jerome Wiesner and Dick Daley; experiments on the equivalence of electron and proton charge; Fred Hoyle's continuous creation theory experiment to detect matter creation with Sam Cohen which got attention from Hermann Bondi; and some of the low temperature experiments with Peter Stephens and Dan Oates; he also mentions Edwin Land, Edward Purcell, V. Jaccarino and others.
(1925- ); Ph.D. in physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (1955); became a professor at MIT and retired in 1996; started the Physics Project Laboratory (1964), the Corridor Laboratory (1970) and developed a concentrated study course.
