College and University calendars, College Council and University Court and Sentate minutes and papers, Finance Department statements of accounts, Secretary's Department files and correspondence, scrapbooks, all contain material relating to the Departments of Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics and Natural Philosophy (1883-1895), Physics and Electrical Engineering. These records include information on the staffing, teaching, buildings, equipment and general administration of the departments. E. A. Steggall: correspondence, departmental records, addresses and papers, 1883-1930s, G. D. Students' Scientific Society minutes, 1900-1940, and Engineering Society minutes, 1933-1963, include reports on papers by members of staff and research students. University College, Dundee, was founded in 1881 and the first classes were taught in 1883; it became part of St. Andrews University in 1897 and in 1954 was renamed Queens College. It was granted a charter as the University of Dundee in 1967. The Chairs of Chemistry, Engineering and Drawing, and Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, were included in the original foundation in 1881. In 1895 the Harris Chair of Physics was founded and Mathematics became a separate Department. Electrical Engineering was taught in the Department of Physics until 1928, when it was transferred to the Department of Engineering. The Watson-Watt Chair of Electrical Engineering was founded in 1947.
