Chemist eminent in two important fields of physical chemistry: (l) the spectroscopy and electronic structures of polyatomic molecurles, and (2) the combustion of hydrocarbons, particularly with reference to the internal combustion engine. Held I.C.I. fellowship, Cambridge, 1946-1949; lecturer and subsequently reader in Chemistry at Leeds University, 1949-1955; Baxter Professor of Chemistry, at University of Dundee, 1955-1976. Fellow of the Royal Society, 1964.
