History of physics II [sound recording], 2011 May 2.
Audio recording of session T10 of the April 2011 annual meeting of the American Physical Society, held in Anaheim, CA in April 2011. This session was sponsored by the Forum on the History of Physics (FHP) and chaired by Gloria Lubkin of Physics Today, retired. Talks (and speakers) include: "Building the Superconducting Super Collider, 1989-1993: The Problem of Project Management" (Michael Riordan); "The Quantum Underground: Early quantum theory textbooks" (Clayton Gearhart); "Poincare, Minkowski, and the Road to Space-Time: New Light on Some History that Did Not Happen" (Felix T. Smith); "X-Ray Astronomy Discovery Experiments, III" (P. C. Fisher). Topics discussed include the superconducting super collider (SSC); Universities Research Association; the US Department of Energy; quantum theory; Max Planck; Arnold Summerfeld, Fritz Reiche and James Jeans; Owen Richardson; Henri Poincare, Lorentz transformations, and Hermann Minkowski; Riccardo Giacconi; x-ray astronomy.
This professional society of educators, industrial and government research workers, and students of physics and related fields, was established in 1899 to promote the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics. The American Physical Society (APS) meetings are a forum for scientists to gather and share research results on a wide range of physics and physics-related topics.
