Migrations of physicists [sound recording], 2011 March 24.
Audio recording of session X8 of the March 2011 annual meeting of the American Physical Society, held in Dallas, TX in March 2011. This session was co-sponsored by the American Physical Society (APS) Forum on the History of Physics (FHP) and APS Forum on International Physics (FIP) and chaired by Noemie Koller, Rutgers University. Talks (and speakers) include: "Migration of Scientists and the Internal Centre for Theoretical Physics -- a Personal and Professional Perspective" (Katepalli R. Sreenivasan); "Physicists' Forced Migrations Under Hitler" (Alan Beyerchen); "Migrations and the Rise of High Energy Physics in Brazil" (Alberto Santoro); "Russian, Soviet, and post-Soviet Scientific Migration: History and Patterns" (Alexei Kojevnikov); "Chinese/American Physicists: A Transnational History" (Zuoyue Wang). Topics discussed include creation of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy; emigration of physicists during World War II helping to strengthen physics elsewhere; development of high energy physics in Brazil; history of Russian physics programs; relationships between American and Chinese physicists.
This professional society of educators, industrial and government research workers, and students of physics and related fields, was established in 1899 to promote the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics. The American Physical Society (APS) meetings are a forum for scientists to gather and share research results on a wide range of physics and physics-related topics.
