Personal records, ca.1924-1989.
The collection related chiefly to his work as a university administrator and educationalist whilst at Hull. The correspondents (c. 1927-1987) includes Margaret Thatcher, Sir Alec Douglas-Howe, and numerous others. There are copies of nearly all of his publications, with, in some cases, drafts and notes. There are also numerous speeches made before and after his retirement, plus miscellaneous items (degree certificates, diplomas, etc.)
Jones (1903-1989) was brought up in N. Wales. He earned degrees in Chemistry and Physics at Bangor University College, where he also obtained a Doctorate; Post-Doctoral work at Cambridge and the Sorbonne. Lecturer (then Senior Lecturer) in organic chemistry, Sheffield University, 1931-1946. G. F. Grant Professor in Chemistry, University College of Hull, 1947-1955. Vice-Chancellor, University of Hull, 1956-1972. Knighted 1968. Numerous publications, but best known for his work with Prof. G. W. Gray at Hull in the area of liquid crystals.
