Stanford University. Department of Physics
Stanford University Department of Physics photographs, 1910-1973 (bulk 1965-1973).
Collection contains photographs of faculty, staff, and students. Most of the photos appear to be identification images, some of which show signs of having been posted on display. There are also images of professor William Webster Hansen; the farewell party for Edward A. Wright (mechanician) in 1942; professor Fernando Sanford with a group on the steps of a house circa 1910; and undated portraits of 19th century German physicists: Max Planck, Gustav Kirchhoff, Hermann von Helmholtz, and two others.
Stanford University opened in 1891, with the Department of Physics among the very first departments at the new University. In its first years, the Department of Physics offered five courses in physics - laboratory and classroom. Today, in addition to research in the Physics Department and at SLAC, graduate students have access to research projects in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and collaborative efforts with the Medical School.
