The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) was a joint project of the US,UK and the Netherlands and was the first-ever space-based observatory to perform a survey of the entire sky at infrared wavelengths. The satellite launched on January 25, 1983 and the mission lasted ten months and over 250,000 infrared sources were observed.
