The Mars Observer Project was managed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and was the first in a series of planned planetary missions which NASA called the Planetary Observer series. The Mars Geoscience Climatology Orbiter (MCGO) was approved in 1984 and "Orbiter" was changed to "Observer," then in 1985 the name was shortened to Mars Observer for clarity and brevity. The Mars Observer space probe was launched on September 25, 1992 to study the Martian surface, atmosphere, climate and magnetic field. Communication with the spacecraft was lost on August 21, 1993, prior to orbital insertion.
