University of Oxford. Alembic Club, 1901-196-.
University of Oxford. Alembic Club records, 1904-1973.
A substantial collection of records gathered from various sources, including an almost complete series of official minute books, financial accounts, ephemeral printed records (rules, programmes, menu cards, membership tickets, etc.), and other miscellaneous papers and correspondence. The minute books contain summaries of numerous scientific papers and talks given to the Club, increasingly after about 1920 by very distinguished chemists and physicists, and also accounts of the discussions following the talks. Examples of the guest lecturers at these meetings are F. W. Aston, J. D. Bernal, Sir W. L. Bragg, Sir J. D. Cockcroft, H. M. F. Freundlich, Dorothy Hodgkin, Sir F. Gowland Hopkins, Sir J. H. Jeans, Kathleen Lonsdale, F. A. Paneth, Sir William Pope, E. K. Rideal, Lord Rutherford, H. S. Taylor, and Sir H. W. Thompson.
The Alembic Club was established by a group of students and young graduates at Oxford in 1901, and was a very active academic society for more than 50 years. Its weekly lectures and discussions were attended by undergraduates and senior members of the University, and frequently addressed very up-to-date topics in chemistry and physics. The originator of the Club is thought to have been W. M. Hooton, a mathematician; the first President was G. W. F. Holroyd; and active early members included Bertram Lambert, H. G. J. Moseley, N. V. Sidgwick, Sir H. T. Tizard, and A. F. Walden. The senior section ceased to meet regularly in 1965, but the club continued as an undergraduate club.
