Scully, Marlan O. (Marlan Orvil), 1939-
Oral history interview with Marlan O. Scully, 2004 July 15 and 16.
Topics include Scully's passage from petroleum engineering in Wyoming to a theoretical physics thesis at Yale University under Willis E. Lamb; his teaching physics at Yale and MIT in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His controversy with Edwin T. Jaynes on semi-classical vs. quantum electrodynamics; Professor at the Optical Science Center at the University of Arizona in the 1970s; his working with Kirtland Air Force Base, Redstone Arsenal and Los Alamos on defense -- related projects, including laser anti-missile missiles; his position at the Max-Planck Institute in Garching, Germany; his collaborations with Julian Schwinger and others; the origins of Scully's "quantum eraser" idea and its application to new devices; his mode of working with graduate students.
Marlan Scully, theoretical physicist best known for his work in quantum optics. He received his Ph.D. under Willis Lamb at Yale University in 1965. He has held professorships at Yale University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Arizona, Max Planck Institute, University of New Mexico, Princeton University and Texas A&M. In 2005 he accepted a joint professional appointment at Texas A&M and Princeton Universities.
