This item is a 8.5 x 7.5 inch diary written by Leo Goldberg. Only the first fifteen pages, and last page of the diary have any entries. Of greatest importance is that Goldberg writes of his decision to leave the University of Michigan for Harvard University.
Leo Goldberg (1913-1987) was an astrophysicist who carried out research into the composition of stellar atmospheres and the dynamics of the loss of mass from cool stars. His main subject of research was the study of the sun from space. Goldberg received his degrees from Harvard and went on to be the director of three important observatories: University of Michigan (1946-60), Harvard (1960-1971), and Kitt Peak National Observatory (1971-1977). He played an important role in founding the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Kitt Peak National Observatory, and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. He was president of the American Astronomical Society (1964-1966) and the International Astronomical Union (1971-1976).
