The papers of George H. Ludwig currently contain only meeting material (Series I, Meetings); the remaining material will be made available when processing is complete. The Meetings series lists major meetings in which Dr. Ludwig was a substantial participant. The many lesser meetings in which he participated as a part of his general management responsibilities are not included. In the box list of the finding aid, changes in organizational positions are indicated in bold in the column titled "Organization," and the presenter for multi-author papers is underlined in the column titled "Role."
This collection includes detailed information on the construction and use of the earliest Explorer satellites (Explorers I, II, III, and IV) at the University of Iowa (1953-1960), as well as information on other satellites including the Orbiting Geophysical Observatories at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) (1960-1965). The collection also documents the development of the central satellite research data processing capabilities at the Goddard Space Flight Center (1965-1972), the development and operation of the polar and geostationary environmental satellite systems at the National Environmental Satellite Service (1972-1980), administration of NOAAs Environmental Research Laboratories (1980-1984), and a variety of other consulting and research roles (1984-1991).
