Gustavus Hinrichs papers, 1864-1890.
The papers of Gustavus Hinrichs document his research in chemistry, physics, astronomy, meteorology, and other subjects. The collection consists of his collected publications (items in box 1 were collected by James P. Wells).
Danish chemist and meteorologist. Educated at the University of Copenhagen and the Polytechnic School, both in Denmark. He earned the C.P. degree at the Polytechnic School in 1860, and emigrated from Denmark to the United States during the summer of 1861. In 1872 he earned an M.D. at Missouri Medical College, and the LL.D. at Griswold College in 1884. Hinrichs conducted research and published in chemistry, physics, astronomy, meteorology, and geology, among others. Hinrichs was one of six researchers credited with the discovery of the Periodic System of Elements during the 1860s. In the field of astronomy, Hinrichs wrote about the Amana Colonies meteorite shower, which fell on February 12, 1875 in Iowa County, Iowa.
