Radio astronomer and physicist. Research Scientist with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (Australia), Division of Radiophysics, 1946-1955; on the faculty of Caltech (devoloped radio astronomy program), 1955-1961; returned to CSIRO in 1961 as first Director of the Parkes Telescope, later the Australian National Radio Astronomy Observatory, 1961-1970, continued to work at observatory until his retirement in 1981.
