Leonard S. Cutler (1928-2006), a leading authority on atomic timekeeping and quantum-mechanical effects. He earned his BS (1958), MS (1960), and Ph.D (1966) in Physics from Stanford University while working at neighboring Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. He spent his entire career at Hewlett-Packard and, later, at Agilent Labs, an HP spin-off. His research included atomic frequency standards; designing atomic chronometers; noise theory; quantum electronics; atomic beam work; lasers; magnetic bubble memories; disc memories; superconductivity.
