This memoir by Benjamin Lax is in the form of an extended informal interview which took place at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Lincoln Laboratory over several sessions from 1998 to 2000. The sessions were recorded on tape and transcribed by the interviewer, Dr. Donald T. Stevenson (assistant director of the MIT Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory from 1960 to 1988, colleague and friend of Lax). The memoir discusses anecdotes of Lax's early family life and early education, his immigration to the United States from Hungary, his advanced education, military involvement, and his advancing career in physics. Topics include: MIT Radiation Laboratory, cyclotron resonance, Ludwign Boltzmann, ionospheric physics, magnetic field research, work at Los Alamos Natioanl Laboratory, the establishment of the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory, superconductors, lasers.

Army radar officer, MIT Radiation Laboratory (1944-1946); MIT Lincoln Laboratory (1951), head of the Solid State Division (1955), associate director (1964); professor of physics, MIT (1964); helped to plan and build the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory, and first director (1961-1981). Research on solid state and other areas of physics requiring high magnetic fields and included work on microwave ferrites, plasma physics, semiconductors, magnetospectroscopy, thermonuclear fusion, x-rays, and lasers.
