Scientist and mathematician; MS in mathematics, University of Pittsburgh (1939); Sterling research fellow at Yale University; research associate at Cornell University (1941-1942); worked at a variety of institutions during World War II including the Polytechic Institute of Brooklyn and the University of Pittsburgh. He later was research professor in the Institute for Fluid Dynamics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Maryland. In 1960 he became the Director of General Sciences at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center.
