Robert M. Patterson papers, 1775-1853.
This collection includes letters to and from A. D. Bache, John Gummere, Ferdinand R. Hassler, Samuel M. Leiper, Robert C. Reid, John Sergeant, John Vaughan, and others. Fifteen letters are to President Franklin Pierce from various persons recommending Robert Maskell Patterson's son for the directorship of the Mint, 1853. There is a large number of miscellaneous notes and papers on a great variety of topics, including astronomy, algebra, annuities, coal, canals, electricity, magnetism, optics, sound, the deaths of Adams and Jefferson, music, and natural philosophy.
There are a number of lectures, a set of accounts at the University of Virginia, and letters to the trustees of the University of Virginia, University of Pennsylvania, and Girard College. There are also examination questions in natural philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania, 1829-1832.
In addition, there are five separate volumes (B/P274.1) that concern mathematics, problems in astronomical navigation, and clocks and time keeping. Among unrelated items in the collection are Phineas Pemberton's meteorological observations, 1775-1777; Ferdinand R. Hassler's list of books and instruments for the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1817; and papers on Thomas Leiper's stone quarry and canal.
Interfiled with the Robert Maskell Patterson materials are papers of his father, Robert Patterson. These papers are principally letters from Thomas Freeman and John Garnett, with some miscellaneous writings, such as "Hints towards a primer for my little boy," and a commencement address at the University of Pennsylvania, 1813.
Robert Maskell Patterson was a professor of natural philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania and director of the U.S. Mint. His father, Robert Patterson, was a revolutionary soldier and mathematician. He taught mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania, 1779-1814, and was the director of the U.S. Mint, 1805-1824.
