deStaebler, Herbert C. (Herbert Conrad)
Herbert C. deStaebler papers, 1953-2007.
Records include information on the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) Linear Electron Accelerator Project (LEAP); reports and publications from the Stanford Microwave Lab (ML) and High Energy Physics Lab (HEPL); science and engineering notes and notebooks; SLAC Hazardous Experimental Equipment Committee (HEEC) records, including a binder on incidents and explosions; and slides of Beam Switchyard (BSY) and End Station A (ESA). Topics include: Mark II and Mark III accelerators, magnetic spectrometers and linear electron accelerators. Also includes Dick Neal thesis ("Proposal for a Two-mile Linear Electron Accelerator"); a memo from Panofsky about SLAC Research Groups; proceedings of cosmic ray congresses, annotated reprints about such subjects as elastic and inelastic theories, and resonances. The collection also includes x-ray photographs taken by DeStaebler and displayed in SLACs Panofsky Auditorium. Correspondents include Wolfgang K.H. Panofsky, Edward L. Ginzton, Richard B. Neal, William W. Hansen, and Matt Sands.
Herbert "Hobey" Conrad deStaebler was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He earned bachelor (1950) and doctoral (1954) degrees in physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1956 W.K.H. Panosky recruited him to Stanfords High Energy Physics Laboratory (HEPL) where he helped design what became SLAC. The rest of his professional life was devoted to SLAC including work in the electron scattering group and their work on the deep inelastic scattering experiments, the DELCO detector at PEP, the Mark II detector, the SLC, and BaBar.
