John Backus archive, 1963-1990.
The Backus papers consist of published papers, correspondence (1963-1990), laboratory notebooks, book revision notes, and files with regard to his research in the acoustics of synthetic reeds. Much of the correspondence is with Carleen M. Hutchins (many concerning revisions to the string chapter of the second edition of his book). One piece involving Mrs. Saunders (Margaret T).
John Graham Backus, 1911-1988; Professor of Physics, University of Southern California, 1945-1980. His researach interests were focused on the area of musical acoustics. His greatest contribution was to provide fundamental data on the nonlinear flow control properties of woodwind reeds.
