Tulane University. Department of Physics and Engineering Physics
Tulane University histories of the departments of physics and engineering physics, 2010.
Contains two historical accounts of the development of the physics programs at Tulane University. One document titled "History of the Tulane University Physics Department" (by Robert Purrington) covers the history from the founding in 1850 until 2007. The second document titled "History of the Tulane Department of Physics and Engineering Physics" (by James McGuire) covers the time between 2003 and 2010. Topics discussed in both include: the founding and early days of the physics programs; discussion of many former faculty and staff and overall changes in administration; Hurrican Katrina, effects on the department and students, and recovery efforts.
Tulane University was founded in 1834 as the Medical College of Louisiana, and the name changed to the Tulane University of Louisiana in 1884. The department of physics was founded in 1850. The department is currently called the department of physics and engineering physics, and offers undergraduate degrees in science, dual degree programs in science and engineering, and post-graduate degrees of M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics. Tulane University is a member of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) consortium.
