The records appear to cover the whole of his career including student notes from Bangor; research notebooks from Xerox; his teaching courses at Coleraine; a great range of material from Thorn-EMI; records of his activities while Sheffield Vice-Chancellor which do not form part of the official Vice-Chancellor's archive; and what may prove to be a comprehensive record of the public roles he undertook while at Wolfson including current files at the time of his death.
Welsh physicist specializing in semiconductors and molecular electronics. He studied physics through the PhD level at the University College of North Wales, Bangor, graduating in 1964. He was influential in British science policy through his chairmanship of several academic bodies and his two reports on the future supply of scientists and how university research should be assessed. He held two major industrial posts, the first in the United States, where he was senior research scientist with the Xerox Corporation and later as Director of Research and Chief Scientist of Thorn EMI. He was appointed President of Wolfson College, Oxford in 2001. He was knighted in 1997 for his services to higher education.
