Jesse Greenstein recollections of Otto Struve, 1988.
Jesse Greenstein's informal recollections of Otto Struve and his work in astrophysics. Greenstein taped this memoir in response to a biographical article on Struve by Kevin Krisciunas, and Greenstein's recollections contain references to Krisciunas' work. Topics discussed include: Yerkes Observatory, radio astronomy, and spectroscopy.
Jesse Greenstein, astronomer. Came to the California Institute of Technology in 1948 to run the astronomy program, which then included the administration of the Palomar 200-inch telescope. While at Caltech he also did research on stellar composition and high resolution spectra using the Palomar telescope. Became a leader in the profession, and an administrator in professional scientific organizations.
Otto Struve, Russian astronomer. Director of Yerkes Observatory, editor of the Astrophysical Journal, author of numerous books, and researcher in astronomy. He also served as president of the International Astronomical Union and oversaw the commissioning of the Otto Struve Telescope built between 1933 and 1939, at the McDonald Observatory.
