(1923-2008) Sc.D, University of Cambridge, physics (1959). Work in microwave antenna design, development of radar, synchotron, klystron. Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE) General Physics Division; research associate, W.W. Hansen Laboratories at Stanford; Rutherford Appleton Laboratory; wrote THE PHYSICS OF CHARGED PARTICLE BEAMS; fellow, Institute of Physics; formulated the Lawson Criterion, a general measure of a system that defines the conditions needed for a fusion reactor to achieve net power.
