Letter to Mr. Cook, Esq. declining an invitation to lecture at Woolwich.
Chemist and natural philsosopher. Apprenticed to a bookbinder, he devoted his leisure to science. In 1827 he succeeded to Sir Humphrey Davy's chair of Chemistry at the Royal Institution. Renowned for his work on electricity and electricity and electromagnetism. His Christmas lectures at the Royal Institution attracted all classes of learners. He was a devout Christian and a member of the Glassites. He rejected all posts of honour and confined himself to his work at the Royal Institution.
